马特洪峰(Matterhorn)是阿尔卑斯山上最后几座人类可以攀登的山峰之一,最终于1865年被登顶,这十年左右被称为“阿尔卑斯主义的黄金时代”(golden age of alpinism)也由此结束。

That iconic pyramid-shaped peak in the background—the Matterhorn—is probably the best clue that we’re in Switzerland. It’s one of the highest peaks in the Alps, towering just inside Switzerland’s border with Italy. The Gornergrat Bahn (aka the Matterhorn Railway) takes passengers from the village center in Zermatt (at an altitude of 5,200 feet) to the station at Gornergrat ridge (over 10,000 feet) in 33 minutes, offering incredible views along the way.

The Italians call it Monte Cervino, and the French call it Mont Cervin, but most know it as the Matterhorn—from the German words ‘matte’ (meadow) and ‘horn’ (peak).
