They are smart. They know how to steal. They know how to find food. They know how to intimidate. Who are they? They are macaque monkeys.

Intimidate:to frighten or threaten someone, usually in order to persuade them to do something that you want them to do

 Macaque:a medium-sized monkey from Africa or Asia, with a long face and pouches (= spaces) inside its cheeks for holding food猕猴,恒河猴

它们是聪明的。他们知道怎么偷东西。它们知道怎么找吃的。他们知道怎么吓唬人。它们是谁?它们是猕猴。

They have taken over the old city of Lopburi in Thailand. About 8,400 of them are in the center of the city. They are territorial. They roam neighborhoods in troupes. Dozens of businesses in Lopburi are closing. They include a music school, gold shop, barber, cell phone store and movie theater.

The monkeys were not always such a hazard. They attracted tourists. Faithful Buddhists thought feeding them was a good deed. Now times have changed.

Recently, the coronavirus made things worse. There are fewer tourists, which means that travelers give less food to the monkeys.

Over the years, the monkeys moved into abandoned buildings. They trashed whatever they came across. They rip antennas and windshield wipers off parked cars.

In a hardware store window, stuffed animals in the shape of crocodiles and tigers peer out at the street. The monkey traffic outnumbers pedestrians. The plush toys were to scare away the monkeys. It worked for a couple months. But the macaques soon figured out that the stuffed animals were not real.

As a young male macaque wandered into her store, the shop owner said, “It has never been this bad. We are not against the monkeys. But it is difficult when people are afraid of the monkeys biting them when they come to our store.”

A man runs a general store on the main street of Lopburi. He has given in to the macaques. A plump male monkey sat on bags of dog food, sipping a yogurt drink. A clutch of young Macaques swarmed a counter waiting for handouts of cookies. There were monkeys among the piles of batteries and monkeys among the light bulbs.

What happens when monkeys come into contact with humans? An observer said that years ago the monkeys were fewer, bigger and healthier. Their fur was shiny and thick. They kept to the temples, as well as the ruins of the ancient Khmer civilization.

A truck stopped at the light. Its flatbed was filled with crates of fruit for the market. A monkey spotted the produce and  leapt onto the truck. Dozens more came. By the time the light turned green, the crates were cleared. The gorging began.

Then tourists came with easy and unhealthy food. Along with bananas and citrus, the macaques feasted on junk food. An observer said, “The monkeys are never hungry. They are just like children who eat too much KFC.”

 Compared with the monkeys of the forest, their urban counterparts have less muscle. They have more hypertension and blood disease. Their fur has thinned. Some have gone bald. With food so available, they have more time to breed and to give birth. Their population has exploded.

Local officials have begun sterilizing the monkeys. More than 300 animals underwent surgery last month. Officials wil sterilize  200 more in August.
